Vào 09:00 - 10:00, ngày 17/11/2024 tại Rạp Khăn Quàng Đỏ, Câu lạc bộ Nhạc kịch trường Trường Phổ thông liên cấp song ngữ Olympia sẽ biểu diễn trích đoạn vở nhạc kịch "The Man Who Laughs" (Thằng Cười) -  tác phẩm chuyển thể từ tiểu thuyết nổi tiếng của nhà văn Victor Hugo. Câu chuyện xoay quanh nhân vật Gwynplaine, một đứa trẻ bị những kẻ buôn người tàn ác hủy hoại khuôn mặt để nụ cười ghê rợn luôn hiện hữu. Qua hành trình sống và đấu tranh của Gwynplaine, tác giả Victor Hugo gợi mở những thông điệp nhân văn về tình thương, sự cảm thông và khát vọng công lý trong một xã hội còn đầy rẫy bất công.

Trong chương trình, các bạn học sinh của CLB sẽ biểu diễn những phân đoạn khác nhau trong suốt tiến trình vở nhạc kịch.

• Stars in the sky: Khúc hát ru trìu mến mà day dứt của người cha nuôi Ursus trong đêm đầu tiên khi nhận cưu mang hai đứa trẻ tội nghiệp Gwynplaine và Dea.
• At the palace: Phân đoạn khắc hoạ hình dung về cung điện - một thế giới đầy rực rỡ, xa hoa trong tưởng tượng của những con người trẻ tuổi và lời nhắc nhở của người cha về góc khuất của thế giới nguy nga mà phù phiếm, đấy dối trá ấy
• Can it be: Ca khúc khắc hoạ tâm trạng của nhân vật chính Gwynplaine khi lần đầu tiên nhận được lời tỏ bày từ công nương Josiana; đầy hy vọng và khao khát được chấp nhận và yêu thương.
• I see myself in you: Cuộc gặp gỡ của Gwynplaine và công nương Josiana ngay tại cung điện, đầy bất ngờ và những hiểu lầm.
• I could change the world: Ca khúc kết thúc vở kịch. Sau mọi biến cố dồn dập, Gwynplaine tưởng chừng suy sụp hoàn toàn. Sau cùng, anh nhớ đến cha Ursus và Dea, là hai người thân duy nhất của mình. Anh chạy về quán trọ Tacaster, được biết hai cha con Ursus đã bị trục xuất khỏi nước Anh, giờ đang trên tàu chuẩn bị ra khơi. Gwynplaine tìm tới bến tàu, đoàn tụ cùng cha và người anh yêu thương. Họ hát vang ca khúc khải hoàn, tràn đầy hy vọng, hướng tới một chân trời mới, một cuộc sống mới. Ngoài ra, CLB cũng trình diễn ca khúc I dreamed a dream - ca khúc nổi bật trong vở nhạc kịch Những người khốn khổ, vở diễn đầu tiên đã công diễn thành công năm 2022, như chương đầu tiên đánh dấu sự ra đời của câu lạc bộ Nhạc kịch!

Các màn biểu diễn được dàn dựng và biểu diễn dưới sự điều phối, tham gia của giáo viên và học sinh thuộc Câu lạc bộ Nhạc kịch trường Trường Phổ thông liên cấp song ngữ Olympia tại Hà Nội - trường Việt Nam đầu tiên đạt kiểm định WASC, dành cho học sinh 4 tuổi đến lớp 12. Qua trích đoạn từ vở diễn “Thằng Cười”, các em sẽ khiến khán giả khó quên với sự tái hiện từ một tác phẩm vừa kinh điển vừa gần gũi, chứa đựng nhiều điểm gặp gỡ đặc biệt với chủ đề “Giao lộ sáng tạo” của Lễ hội Thiết kế Sáng tạo Hà Nội 2024. Trích đoạn “Thằng Cười” không chỉ kết nối văn hóa phương Đông và phương Tây, mà còn hòa quyện giữa thế giới kinh điển và văn hóa đương đại, tạo nên sự giao thoa đầy ý nghĩa. Bên cạnh đó, vở diễn “Thằng Cười” hứa hẹn góp phần khẳng định tinh thần kết nối, sáng tạo nghệ thuật của các bạn trẻ Câu lạc bộ Nhạc kịch trường Olympia nói riêng và tuổi trẻ Thủ đô nói chung.

From 9:00 to 10:00 AM on November 17, 2024 at the Red Scarf Theater, the Musical Club of The Olympia Schools will perform an excerpt from the musical "The Man Who Laughs" - adapted from the famous novel by Victor Hugo. The story revolves around the character Gwynplaine, a child whose face has been disfigured by cruel human traffickers, leaving him with a terrifying, permanent smile. Through Gwynplaine's journey of life and struggle, author Victor Hugo conveys powerful messages about love, empathy, and the desire for justice in a society still rife with injustice.

During the program, the students of the Club will perform different segments throughout the course of the musical.

• Stars in the sky: The affectionate yet haunting lullaby of foster father Ursus on the first night he takes in the two poor children, Gwynplaine and Dea.
• At the palace: This segment depicts the palace as a brilliant, luxurious world imagined by young people, contrasted with the father's reminder of the hidden corners of that magnificent, frivolous, and deceitful world.
• Can it be: The song depicts the main character Gwynplaine's mood when he first receives a confession from Princess Josiana, filled with hope and the desire to be accepted and loved.
• I see myself in you: This segment depicts the meeting between Gwynplaine and Princess Josiana at the palace, filled with surprises and misunderstandings.
• I could change the world: This song concludes the play. After all the sudden events, Gwynplaine appears to have completely collapsed. Finally, he remembers his father Ursus and Dea—his only relatives. He rushes back to the Tacaster Inn, where he learns that Ursus and his father have been expelled from England and are now on a ship preparing to set sail. Gwynplaine makes his way to the dock, reunites with his father and the person he loves, and they sing a triumphant song full of hope, looking forward to a new horizon and a new life.

In addition, the Club also performed the song I Dreamed a Dream, the highlight song from the musical Les Misérables. The first performance of this piece was successfully presented in 2022, marking the beginning of the Musical Club!

The performances were staged and performed staged and coordinated by the teachers and students of the Musical Club of The Olympia Schools in Hanoi - the first Vietnamese school to achieve WASC accreditation, for students from 4 years old to grade 12. Through excerpts from the play "The Man Who Laughs", the students will create an unforgettable experience for the audience with their reenactment of a classic yet familiar work, which contains many unique connections to the theme "Creative Intersection" of the Hanoi Festival of Creative Design 2024. The excerpt "The Man Who Laughs" not only connects Eastern and Western cultures but also blends the world of classics and contemporary culture, creating a meaningful exchange. Additionally, the play ''The Man Who Laughs'' promises to affirm the spirit of connection and artistic creativity among the young members of The Olympia Schools Musical Club, as well as the youth of the capital in general.
